Fennel & Indigestion

I think we have all - at one time or another - suffered with indigestion. Tummy cramps, nausea, heartburn, gas and bloating? Studies have shown that using fennel works as well, if not better, than a lot of over the counter medicines in relieving indigestion. In fact it is quite common in Mediterranean counties to eat some fennel seeds after a meal.

WHY DOES FENNEL HELP?

Fennel Seeds contain the phytochemicals - estragole, fenchone and anethole, which have antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. It therefore helps the digestion by reducing inflammation in the bowels and decreasing the bacteria that cause gassiness and cramping.

HOW CAN I USE FENNEL TO IMPROVE MY DIGESTION?

Fennel tea - see end of this blog.

Or you could add a couple of drops of fennel essential oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil and massage it into your abdomen or feet.

Simplest of all , you could just chew a teaspoon of fennel seeds though I have to say I don’t really like doing this as they are a bit gritty in texture!

NB if you are pregnant or breast feeding please always consult a doctor or qualified aromatherapist before using any essential oils.
