Fennel For Women

Being a woman isn’t always easy is it? I’m specifically right now to how menstruation and menopause can cause problems. Cramps, nausea, hot flushes, hormonally induced anxiety and insomnia. Not fun.

We’ve been talking about fennel this week and how it is a bit of a wonder herb. So if you’ve got problems with your periods or with hot flushes etc read on ….

MENSTRUATION

Studies show that taking fennel improves our blood flow and so, during a period it helps the uterus expel the uterine lining more efficiently. This results in shortening the length of your period.

Fennel also reduces the production of oxytocin and prostaglandin - two of the hormones that contribute to painful periods - and thus women had a significant reduction in menstrual cramps.

MENOPAUSE

Fennel helps to relieve hot flushes as well as anxiety and sleeplessness associated with post menopause. A study reported women who took fennel twice a day showed a 35% reduction in symptoms while those taking the placebo essentially showed no change. Fennel contains phytoestrogens, oestrogen-like compounds found in plants that have been used to address a number of menopause symptoms and to balance hormones.

I use fennel in the Morning Essential Oil Blend for all these reasons. I’d recommend massaging that across your abdomen to help or using the Balance pulse point roller. For other ways of using fennel - do read yesterdays post and particularly the recipe for fennel tea.
