Fabric Softener Recipe

A lot of the fragrances in laundry detergents are full of chemicals that can irritate your skin and of course aren’t good for the environment. As a result, lots of us are now opting for natural eco alternatives. Lots of these have no scent at all which is frustrating if you love the fresh smell of clean laundry as much as I do!

You know what I am going to suggest now don’t you? Essential oils. Citrus scents like lemon, grapefruit and orange are revitalising whilst tea tree and eucalyptus give a clean aroma and are natural disinfectants.

But if you’re looking for calming scents for bed sheets and PJs, lavender oil is the obvious choice. Avoid using the woody resinous oils like sandalwood as these can leave a residue.

The simplest way of all is to add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to your normal capful (or wash load amount ) of unscented natural eco laundry detergent will do it. If you want it to smell stronger that add another drop.

And what about your fabric softener? I make my own as it’s so easy. Mix 10 drops of essential oil into 1 litre of distilled white vinegar and shake well. Add one cup into the softener tray for large loads or half a cup for small loads and I promise you will have gorgeous soft laundry that smells of your essential oil NOT the vinegar.
